A Shark at Opening Day?

The Nationals lost 2-0 to the Atlanta Braves on a dreary Opening Day yesterday.  I'm not going to say that the sole reason was that the Shark didn't play but I am going to think it really hard so that perhaps whoever reads this will think it as well (if it works that way).

Bernadina subs Laynce Nix and RicK AnKiel had very forgettable games.  Nix came in as a pinch hitter with a man on third in the 7th and struck out. AnKiel went 0 for 3 with a walk (he was promptly thrown out, by a wide margin, trying to steal second).  He also ended the game with a strike out (I guess that's why they usually capitalize the Ks in his name).  Mako Morse didn't fair much better in left with a un-shark-like 0 for 4.  Let's be honest.  They needed the Shark.

That said, it is very possible that the Shark did make an appearance early on in the game.  As the Nationals took the field at the top of the first, their center fielder was heavily covered up with a red mask...  Sitting in Section 101 of the Shark Tank (outfield seats), I could tell that something was different about Mr. AnKiel.  He seemed a lot faster than usual... Did he always have that protuberance on his back?

I came to the conclusion that "Rick AnKiel" was actually the Shark in disguise.  The only reasoning I could guess was that AnKiel got pre-game jitters and was crying in the locker room.  He must have gotten over it, because I instantly recognized his chiseled jaw in center field at the top of the second.

Conclusion: The Shark was the Opening Day starting center fielder for the Nationals.

Other thoughts:
  • The Sharkadina Duo were officially the first fans on the jumbotron of the Nationals 2011 season!
  • Upsettingly, Tyler Clippard's intro song wasn't 'Peaches' by The Presidents of the United States of America
  • Something distracted me from watching Todd Coffey's sprint from the bullpen. Weak.
  • The Syracuse Chiefs' (the team the shAAArk is currently playing for) Opening Day is April 14th.  Who's up for a 7 hour road trip?
  • VV Brown (a souldrummer favorite) has written a song about Roger Bernadina.
More to come.

  1. I know that friggin' VV Brown song. They used it to play it every hour on the hour it seems on BET Soul. You gotta spend more time in the video 'hood, bro.
