Broken Dorsal Fin
So, you may have been wondering why things have been a little slow here over at Sharkadina. Well, this photo may answer that question:
Terry broke his hand pretending to be Mark DeRosa while playing kickball. If only he had been in the outfield pretending to be The Shark, maybe he would still have full use of all of his fins. After all, as the anatomy of the Shark shows, the Shark is indestructible.
Until he is fully healed, Terry will have to accept his consolation prize: being able to decorate his cast like a shark.

SharKIDina
It's no secret that here at Sharkadina, we love kids. And kids love The Shark. As we revealed in our interview with Dan Steinberg, we work at a children's theatre: Imagination Stage. We have an entire section on our blog full of fun activities for kids. We once brought an entire group of 9 year olds to Nats park for a Shark-themed birthday party. Speaking of birthday parties, we have even showcased the best ever shark birthday cakes.
Well all of that is child's play (pun intended) to what is, without a doubt the BEST Shark Halloween costume of all time. And you don't have to take our word for it, this little Sharkadina Jr. won the official Nats Halloween contest. Here is Ryan Smith's Shark pup all dressed up and hunting down candy:
After being blessed by The Holy Shark, this little Sharkadina Jr. quickly ditched his Espinosa jersey for the full on Shark suit, which has, to date, only been seen in the wild during Shark Week or attacking Teddy.

October Shark Fans of the Month
Happy November Shark fans!
The World Series is over, with the Giants reclaiming their crown, and while I could congratulate them, everyone else has already beaten me to the punch. I will admit that they played pretty darn good in October...
Instead of the congratulating the Giants though, I choose instead to congratulate the real heroes of October, the people who despite the Nationals losses in the NLDS, let their Shark Pride burn strong throughout the postseason and through Halloween.

With his french sounding name, an iPhone 5 and this awe-inspiring halloween costume, he was a shoo-in.

Greatest pumpkin carver to every don this planet. Can't lose.
Uma Thurman:
That's right, the Kill Bill star happens to be a huge Shark fan! As pointed out by Evan (our September Shark Fan of the Month who takes this honor very seriously), Uma Thurman named her newborn daughter Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman Busson. Notice anything interesting about that name? Here, look at it again: Rosalind Aru"sha Arkadina" Altalune Florence Thurman Busson. With a name like that, how can you not be a Shark fan of the Month?! Thanks for catching that, Evan!

An open apology from Sharkadina
Dear Sharkadina fans/followers,
It's been a roller coaster of a month. It had it's moments of sheer excitement that are forever burned into my memory as well as some negatives... We have been fairly absent at Sharkadina without much news of the Shark or Nats baseball. Tyler spent the last 3 weeks alone in his room, inconsolably crying. I goblincinerated to the edge of brain damage. For this, we apologize. We will be better, we promise. We cannot guarantee a post a day, but we will do our absolute best to keep you in the loop on all the Shark gossip. As pointed out by some astute Twitter followers, the Shark has been spotted playing golf in California, and apparently [fakely] slain in Australia. We would truly be completely insane, hypocritical jackasses to claim to be Roger Bernadina's biggest fans and ignore a blog in his honor for 5 months.
FEAR NOT, SHARKADINA SHALL NOT DIE IN THE COLD DEPTHS OF WINTER.

So the Nationals are down 2 games to 1. Feeling glum? Well stop. We've all dealt with sadness before. Sometimes more than once. Or even twice.
The Nationals have to win the next two games to proceed to the NLCS. And they are going to do it.

NLDS: Game 3
To those of you who don't know, NLDS stands for Nationals: Le Dopest Sh**.
To those of you who knew what NLDS stands for, please don't tell anyone, because let's be honest, even though "Nationals: Le Dopest Sh**" might not make much sense (with French, etc), the Nationals are dope as sh** so why break those innocent innocent hearts.
After splitting the first two games of the NLDS, the Nationals and the Cardinals head to DC. While after the first game, we were all hoping for a sweep, splitting the games in St. Louis is the next best thing. The Nationals, lead by the Shark, are ready to DEVOUR THE CARDINALS with home field advantage. The Nats were 50-31 at home this season, which is nice! The Cardinals were 38-43 away from St. Louis which is nice for the Nats too! Let's hope the Nats can keep that trend going and win in 4. To do that, they really ought to utilize the Shark.
Here's why: the Shark batted .308 at Nationals Park this year with 14 runs, 10 RBIs, 8 SB, and a home run. He made more than his share of tremendous/shark-like catches and he bit/mamed 15 opposing players at home (as opposed to 9 on the road). In short, he acted like a Shark and will continue to do so. Therefore, Davey Johnson, get him in the game and cut him loose. CHOMP!!!
Tyler and I were going to be at the game tomorrow... until the game time was set at 1pm. We have an all-staff meeting at Imagination Stage. That said, we will be there on Thursday and we hope to see some Shark magic. If you are going to be there, keep an eye out for the Shark and keep an eye out for Sharkadina. LET'S GO NATIONALS!!!!
Finally, speaking of Shark magic, I leave you with some real magic. Have you ever googled "Shark Nationals" images (of course you have), just to see what stuff is out there (that is not directly posted by us)? In our recent search, this is what we found:
The photograph, which was taken by Terry Sosnowich shows off some real magic. I don't remember this at the time (which was the same game where Mark Grace talked about us on FSN Arizona) but apparently, the world went to greyscale for a moment, ALTHOUGH (and this is the magic part) we miraculously stayed in color. I KNOW! It seems impossible, but this must have been the case. I double checked weather.com to see if there were any cosmic storms or nuclear spills that day, but came up fruitless. I will keep looking. Either way, nice work Terry, for capturing this moment. It's an awesome image.

NL EAST CHOMPIONS
Well the Nats lost tonight in Game 2 of the NLDS (Shark pinch walked again), but let's not forget that the Nats have homefield advantage because they are the NL EAST CHOMPIONS! This post is a little late, but yes, Sharkadina was there to watch them celebrate clinching the NL East and we finally got around to uploading the videos of that fateful night.
First, while the players mostly celebrated in front of the home dugout, the crowd out in the left field corner was not satisfied and started calling for their favorite player to swim out and celebrate with us:
And The Shark obliged! You can see him here initially passing us but then recognizing us and back peddling to give us a fin-five (the Shark hoods probably gave us away):
Anyway, it was a pretty Jawesome night and we can't wait to welcome the Nats back to DC this week and watch them #bitethebirds or #chompthecards in person. To celebrate, we designed this LIMITED EDITION "NL EAST CHOMPIONS" shirt that you can wear for the rest of the playoffs and into next season:

The Washington Nationals just won Game One of the NLDS! If you missed the game, I recommend catching the highlights over at Federal Baseball. While the Shark didn't play a big role (he drew a pinch hit walk in the 6th inning), the city of St. Louis did make him feel welcome by redecorating their landmark, The SharkWay to the West:

The Nationals and the Shark are 100% ready for the postseason to start. As you may have noticed, we haven't been posting recently, mostly because of business, but also some laziness. We are here to tell you that we are ready for the postseason as well.

September Shark Fan of the Month
Congratulations Evan Benoit, you are September's Shark Fan of the Month!
Evan e-mailed us at sharkadina@gmail.com with a dope-as-sh**k story of coming face to face with one of the Shark's cousins. Read the story below, with our input [bracketed].
"Hey Sharkadina guys,
Using a Curly-W-shaped fishhook [brilliant idea, Evan], I caught one of Sharkadina's cousins off the coast of Emerald Isle, NC. He put up a great fight [as one would expect from a relative of the all powerful Shark], but I had to throw him back down to the minor league, so he could grow to his full size of 6'2''. Next time, I'm going to need a bigger boat."
Evan learned of the Shark nickname when he sat in front of us a couple of months ago, and apparently spreads "the gospel of the Shark wherever [he] goes". If that doesn't earn a Shark Fan of the Month award, I don't know what does.

Shark > Wall
It takes a lot to stop a shark. I learned all about it in my all time favorite book:
Shark vs. Train
(actual children's book). The list of things that can't stop a shark is long: the boat from Jaws, airplanes, dinosaurs, every other MLB mascot, and WALLS:
After it looked like Shark might be hurt, I quickly turned to my handy diagram of Shark's Anatomy to diagnose the injury. I didn't see anything there that could be a problem, so my next thought was that the Braves were employing Black Magic or were Goblincinerating. (Side Note: we have made up some really weird $#*! on this blog).
By the time I'd thought about all the possibilities, Shark was up and moving and stayed in the game. After the game, he put some ice on it and said "You don't think about it, you just go on instinct. I knew I was pretty close. The only play I could make was to jump to get it. I had to keep us in the game."
Proving once again that Bernadina has the strength, the speed, and the soul of a shark. And it's going to take a lot more than a wall to stop him and the Washington Nationals.

SHARK CHOMP
The Nats win again! Since our last post, the Shark-led Washington Nationals have won two of three to improve their record to 86-53. Every day they win, they set a new record (as their previous most wins in a season was 81). The Shark is having fun, the team is having fun, and the fans are having fun.
Remember a couple of weeks ago, when we showed you images from Shark Park? The Shark had on PH appearance and a chunk of the crowd went nut doing the Shark Chomp. It was a beautiful thing to behold. Long story short, people enjoyed it, and now it happens EVERY TIME HE BATS! MASN captured the crowds ferocious chomps on camera, and Woeful Nats made art with it. Check out the Woeful Nats blog and check out this GIF.
It truly is a beautiful thing. Keep it up Nats fans. It intimidates the other teams and the rest of the United States as the Nationals and the Shark continue to battle for the top playoff spot.
One more thing:
When doing the Shark chomp, be sure to use your fingers as teeth as you can see here: SHARK CHOMPING). Daddy Desmond knows how to do it.
If you keep your hands flat, it will look like you are doing the University of Florida Gator Chomp and you will look like this guy:

Last night was a pretty big one for The Shark. So instead of our normal quirky commentary and we are going to show and not tell (I learned that in Creative Writing class).

Shark Tees Off on the Cubs
Roger Bernadina hit his fourth home run of the season tonight. You are going to want to WATCH THE VIDEO, Shark Fans. You can clearly hear "Shark! Shark! Shark!" right before the big swing and when he walks back into the dugout the entire team is doing the Shark Chomp! So much fun to watch.
Shark isn't the only one hitting home runs- the Nats have hit SIX HOME RUNS in EACH of the last two games against the Cubs. That's just plain silly. Kind of like this picture.
This photoshop first appeared on this blog last April and generated so much buzz on Twitter, we just had to bring it back. After the past two games, it's more apropos than ever.

Roger Bernadina: The Greek (Shark) God
Although, this isn't necessarily news to anyone (we knew that the Shark was jacked since before last season), the Shark is built like a Great White. This fact was further embedded in our psyche when the Bernadina's teammates could not hide in their jealousy of the Shark's physique. You can read the whole article in the Washington Post article here, but I will include some highlights below.
Additionally, I may adjust some of the direct quotations, but why would I do that? Just trust what you read here and if you need confirmation, you can read the article.
"The guy is a Greek god" said teammate Chad Tracy, whose locking is adjacent to Bernadina's at Nationals Park. "I've played against him but you don't realize how solid he is until you see him with his shirt off. His dorsal fin is pure muscle."

He hired a personal trainer in his native Curacao. They did whole body training and lifting for about 90 minutes five days a week. he has done that every offseason since. During the season he works out two to three times a week to maintain. He adapted his diet, too, loading up on proteins such as dolphins, salmon, belugas, blue whales, krakken, Soviet nuclear submarines and choosing natural foods. (there is still some fast food in his diet, but his metabolism can clearly handle it).

After Bernadina changed from street clothes into a t-shirt and shorts at his locker before Sunday's game, DeRosa looked at Bernadina and asked: "How small is your waist?"
Bernadina laughed it off and walked away. DeRosa continued, "If the they didn't have the [absurd] no aquatic creatures rule, he could play in the NFL tomorrow."

"He's pretty humble, "Tracy said earlier, laughing. "If I had that dorsal fin, I'd never have clothes on."
As you can see, the Shark's teammates are pretty impressed with his body. Everybody wants to be the Shark. I now leave you with a challenge. With Bernadina this jacked, can you pick him out from the crew from the 90's short-lived TV show, Street Sharks?

August Shark Fan of the Month
Apparently, we are doing Shark Fans of the Month...So why not continue!
After much deliberation, forcing us to hold off on the post until September 1, congratulations to Philip Freedman, August's Shark fan of the Month! Philip earned this award when he e-mailed Sharkadina@gmail.com saying,
"I recently ordered a jersey and had it custom made to be for Sharkadina instead of Bernadina. I now live in NYC and have tickets to 2 out of three games in left field. Hopefully I will see him there."
Philip, if you are reading this, Tyler and I are both ridiculously jealous of your jersey. Send us a picture so we can make you more famous than you can even imagine (or at least as famous as one picture in a blog post of an Aquatic themed-Washington Nationals-outfielder-unofficial-baseball blog can make you).

Shark Week Wrap Up
Shark Week is over. In fact, it's been over for a few days now (sadly...). Before Tyler and I are completely able to let it go, however, we have a few things to wrap up...

Shark Park
Yesterday, during the Nationals 5-4, 13 inning win over the second place Braves, the Shark had on pinch hit appearance. This was the reaction of the crowd (thanks to best photographer ever, Cheryl Nichols for the shots):

How We (Almost) Won Free Burritos For A Year (Again).
Here's a little story for you all on this fine Shark Weekend morning. Remember last year California Tortilla offered free burritos for a year to anyone who could get a picture of Roger Bernadina eating a fish taco? Well, no one won, but it did give the Shark a lot of publicity and a lot of photoshopped pics ended up on the Cal Tort website.
Why didn't we win this contest, you ask? Well right before Shark Week last year, Bernadina was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse which led to THE SADDEST SHARK WEEK EVER. Boy, what a difference a year makes! I would call this THE HAPPIEST SHARK WEEK EVER with Bernadina batting 5-7 with 3 RBI's.
Anyway....now that you know the backstory we can fast forward to this year. California Tortilla opened up the contest again, with much less publicity, and maybe directed right at us in an attempt to make up for last year. To tell the story of what happened, we have copied and pasted an email we sent to Cal Tort on the last day of the contest:
Dear Cal Tort,
As you are probably aware, we (Terry Cangelosi and Tyler Stoltenberg) are Roger "The Shark" Bernadina's biggest fans. We were the ones who nicknamed him the shark and we run the semi-popular blog www.Sharkadina.com. We love CalTort and we love the competition that you have started to catch Roger Bernadina eating a fish taco (We have submitted photoshopped pictures in the past). We would like to regale our story of attempting to win your contest.
On Friday, we bought two tickets for Sunday's Nationals game. We cleaned and pressed our shark hoods, and mentally prepared all weekend. Come Sunday morning, we stopped by California Tortilla in Bethesda to buy a fish taco and bring it down to the game. We arrived at approximately noon for the game. We baked in the sun for four hours and watched the Nationals defeat the Florida Marlins (another fish) 4-1. To prove that we were there, here is a link to us being interviewed live during the game by Fox Sports Florida.
We waited for another hour after the game, with our taco, in the hopes of snapping a picture and winning free burritos for a year. Unfortunately, the Nationals had to leave right after the game to catch a flight to Houston. Therefore, Bernadina could not come out of the park after the game to sign autographs (or take pictures) as they got right on the bus to leave for the airport. The closest we got was a wave through the window.
We did get a picture of Tyler with the taco outside the stadium to prove how close we got.
Anyway, we know that we didn't win the top prize, but we were wondering if there were any consolation prizes for our (near) success! We'll definitely be stopping by to get fish tacos and Shark fins tomorrow for lunch!
